The Isle of Man U18 boys set an intense pace from the opening whistle. Within the first 15 seconds, a pass found striker Cameron Roome, but his shot was expertly saved by the Neston’s goalkeeper. Moments later, the Isle of Man capitalised on their aggressive press, with Alex Andrew skill-fully weaving down the right wing to set up Roome, who lifted the ball over the keeper to make it 1-0 just two minutes in.
The Isle of Man quickly doubled their lead. Winning possession again, Ben Dougal drove down the left flank, reaching the baseline and, from an improbable angle, slotted a backhand shot through the keeper’s legs, putting the team up 2-0 within four minutes.
Despite the strong start, Neston regained control, pressing Isle of Man’s defence. Centre-back Liam Taverner held firm with key tackles, but eventually, Neston broke through, scoring from a penalty corner to make it 2-1. Just before halftime, a deflected shot wrong-footed Isle of Man’s goalkeeper Tom Babb, levelling the score at 2-2.
In the second half, Neston took the lead with a well-executed penalty corner. Although Isle of Man won several penalty corners of their own, they couldn’t convert. Neston’s frustrations showed, and they were temporarily down to nine players, but Isle of Man couldn’t capitalize, with one shot cleared off the line by a Neston defender.
With two minutes left, captain Archie Cox won a penalty corner after a tough foul. Unfortunately, a miscommunication saw their final chance slip away as the ball went over the baseline, and with the final whistle, the Isle of Man boys were left disappointed as things just didn’t click after their initial surge. Congratulations to Neston on their hard-fought win, and best of luck in the next round.
