In a tight contest at Preston Hockey Club, Preston U16 Boys gained a narrow 3-2 win over Isle of Man U16 Boys in a closely contested Tier 2 Cup match. Both teams were evenly matched throughout the game, showcasing a high level of skill and determination throughout.

The game started at a high tempo, with both teams pressing hard and creating opportunities. Preston opened the scoring with a clinical finish, taking a 1-0 lead, then followed up around ten minutes later with another to make it 2-0 to the home side. However, IOM quickly responded, demonstrating their resilience and equalizing shortly after with a goal from Robbie Valerga. It was clear that both teams were evenly matched in terms of pace and intensity. IOM went into half time 2-1 down.

The second half saw more drama, with both teams fighting for the crucial next goal, for IOM it would put them back in the game, for Preston it would take them a step closer to a win. Isle of Man got back on level terms with Robbie Valerga on target again, converting a penalty corner with a neat reverse stick effort to make the score even at 2-2, with 15 minutes to go. Sadly, a late goal for Preston put them ahead with just 10 minutes left.

Despite a late surge from Isle of Man, Preston’s defense held firm, with goalkeeper and defenders making crucial clearances to protect their slender lead.

Man of the Match: Oisin Dunne

Oisin Dunne was named Man of the Match for his outstanding performance throughout the game. His work rate, vision, and key interceptions in both attack and defense were pivotal in keeping IOM in the game up until the final moments.

In the end, Preston’s clinical finishing and solid defensive display earned them a hard-fought 3-2 victory. The match was a great advert for youth hockey, with both teams displaying great skill, sportsmanship, and determination. Isle of Man will be disappointed with the loss but can take pride in a strong performance against a well-drilled Preston side. The win moves Preston into the next round of  the Tier 2 Cup, we wish them the best of luck in the next round.
