Last weekend saw the first session of the season for the Isle of Man Hockey Talent Academy, bringing together a talented group of young players from across the island. We ran the session as an assessment for potential new players working in addition to the returning players from last season.

As a change to our previous process of identifying potential new players, nominations were invited from clubs as well as the Isle of Man junior squads. The focus age groups were school Years 10 and 11, alongside a small number of Year 9 and Year 12 players. We were delighted to receive additional nominations and, while not all nominated players were invited to attend this assessment, they will remain on our watch list for consideration at future sessions.

For many players, this was their first experience of a more intensive, performance-focused environment, with five hours of contact time, including four hours on the pitch. With such a large group to assess, some players may require further viewing at the October session before the final cohort of around 20 players is selected to attend the remaining Academy sessions in November, December, February and April.

We are extremely grateful for the continued support of the England Hockey North West Talent Academy, whose coaches travel to the Isle of Man to lead each session alongside our local assistant coaches. These sessions provide invaluable development opportunities not only for our young players but also for local coaches through continued professional development. The session dates have been carefully selected around the limited gaps available within the England Hockey calendar.

Despite the warm conditions, the players showed great commitment and energy throughout the day. The morning began with a comprehensive warm-up before moving into a series of 1v1 and 2v1 exercises, exploring both attacking and defensive principles. Following a cool-down and a well-earned lunch break, the afternoon focused on larger group activities, allowing players to apply the morning’s learning in a more game-realistic team environment.

A huge thank you to all the players, coaches and supporters who contributed to a successful day.
