Archie Cox, a 17-year-old sixth form student at Castle Rushen High School, has become a shining star in the world of hockey, progressing from the local Manx Youth Games to competing at the national level with the England Red Team.

Archie’s hockey journey began a decade ago when, as a young boy, he took part in the Manx Youth Games, playing for the South. Since then, his commitment and passion for the sport have only grown. For the past 10 years, he has been a dedicated member of Castletown Hockey Club, where he now co-captains the Men’s 1st team in the Premier League, playing in both the mixed and men’s divisions. Despite his success on the pitch, Archie also finds time to give back to the sport, coaching the club’s junior players.

His talents have not gone unnoticed. Archie has represented the Isle of Man at every junior age group, and in May this year, he earned a spot on the Isle of Man Senior Men’s squad. Competing in the England Hockey County Championships, he further solidified his position as one of the Isle of Man’s most promising young athletes.

Archie’s development as an all-round sportsman has been greatly supported by his involvement with the Isle of Man Sport Aid Academy, where he has spent several years honing his skills. This support has helped him achieve remarkable success over the past three years, particularly as a member of the England Hockey Performance Centre (Fylde) and the Northwest Talent Academy. In these programmes, Archie was selected to compete in end-of-season matches at the prestigious National Hockey Centre in Nottingham, where he faced off against top teams from around the country.

October 2023 marked another milestone in Archie’s career when he was selected by Sport England to participate in the Diploma in Sporting Excellence (DiSE) for hockey, as part of the North Hub. Following his most recent residential programme, he received thrilling news – he had been chosen to play for the England Red team in the School Games Finals. These finals, held at Loughborough University from 29th August to 1st September, will see Archie compete against the best young players from across England, Wales, and Ulster, with six boys’ teams taking part.

Archie’s selection is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and immense talent. His achievement follows in the footsteps of Valkyrs player Luis Novo-Smith, who also reached this level of the sport. Now, Archie is poised to make his mark on the national stage, representing his country with pride.

As he continues to rise through the ranks of hockey, Archie’s journey serves as an inspiration to young athletes on the Isle of Man, proving that with commitment and passion, it is possible to achieve great things on both local and national stages.
