Following an action-packed season of more than 160 matches and a competitive Year 7 tournament, the Isle of Man Secondary Schools Hockey season reached an exciting conclusion last week under the lights at the National Sports Centre, creating a fantastic atmosphere for players and spectators alike.
Despite winning the league trophy comfortably, Ballakermeen could not maintain their dominant form, setting up a repeat of last year’s final between Castle Rushen and St Ninian’s High Schools. From the first whistle, the contest was tight, with both teams evenly matched and no clear favorite. Each side featured elite-level players, notably Ela and Evie, who led their teams with conviction both in and out of possession, ensuring all teammates were involved throughout the 60 minutes. The deadlock was broken by Evie from CRHS after a well-worked spell of possession, but SNHS quickly replied through Lara, sending the game into halftime level. The second half mirrored the first, with both teams battling hard for scoring opportunities. With just five minutes remaining, SNHS seized their chance from a penalty corner converted by Ela, sparking celebrations as they secured the win and lifted the trophy. Umpires Andrea and Louise were praised for their excellent officiating and named Morgan and Rosabelle as players of the match. Congratulations to all teams for an outstanding season that showcased skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
The Year 10 competition concluded in spectacular fashion, with Castle Rushen continuing their dominant league form. Under the floodlights at the NSC, the atmosphere was electric as both teams battled for glory in a match expertly officiated by Jess and Abi, who oversaw their first schools’ final. Ramsey faced a huge challenge against the in-form Castle Rushen side but rose to the occasion with consistent determination, making their opponents work hard for every opportunity. Despite their resilience, Castle Rushen showcased exceptional teamwork and attacking flair, securing a 3–0 victory with goals from Faith, Annie, and Ealee. Special recognition went to Ealee and Maisie, who were named players of the final for their outstanding performances.
The Year 9 final mirrored the excitement of the Year 10 match. QEII entered as the dominant force, having scored more than thirty goals during the league campaign. They faced a spirited Castle Rushen side determined to disrupt their rhythm, with an outstanding display from their goalkeeper, who produced save after save to keep her team in contention. Eventually, QEII broke through, with Bonnie scoring twice and Rhea adding a third. It was another excellent showcase for school hockey, and every player can be proud of their efforts throughout the season. Players of the final were awarded to Rhea and Sophie for their standout performances.
The Year 8 final between Castle Rushen and St Ninian’s delivered an exciting contest, with the winner decided by the narrowest of margins. For many players, this was their first experience of a school final, adding extra nerves and intensity to the occasion. The result was fast-paced play and frequent shifts in possession as both teams fought hard for control. Ultimately, Castle Rushen emerged victorious thanks to a decisive goal from Scarlett, who also earned the player of the final award for an outstanding performance, while Hayley was recognised for SNHS.
In the youngest age group, Year Seven pupils first played a full set of friendly fixtures before meeting again in a round-robin tournament. QEII emerged as winners after an outstanding performance, going the entire afternoon without conceding a goal or losing a match. The umpires faced the tough challenge of selecting a player of the tournament from each school, reflecting the high standard of play across all teams.
This season has been a testament to the growing strength of school hockey on the Isle of Man. Across all age groups, players demonstrated skill, resilience, and teamwork, creating memorable contests and showcasing the depth of talent within our schools.
